Daily Attendance
Not in, miss out! Our school target for attendance is 95%. All absences need to be reported by 9.30am every day. Please phone the school office on 01495 742 934 and leave a voicemail with your child's name, class and reason for absence.
To ensure your child is present every day, please arrange all doctors, dentists & other appointments after school if at all possible. If your child is absent from school and you are unable to call, please email:garntegschool.office@torfaen.gov.uk.
We advice all parents and carers not to take pupils on holiday during term time. Unless attendance is at least 97%, no holiday requests will be authorised. If the Headteacher decides to consider authorisation of your holiday request, circumstances should always be exceptional. Should parents face work restrictions, the Headteacher might request a letter from the employer. To obtain a holiday form, please contact the school office.
If you have any concerns regarding your child's attendance please contact our School Attendance Officers Mrs Williams or Mrs Huxley. Our staff will always try to support you as best as possible.
Strive for 95!
As a parent you are legally responsible for making sure that your child attends school. If your child fails to attend school without an acceptable reason you risk getting a Fixed Penalty Notice or being prosecuted.
Arranging appointments and outings after school hours, at weekends or during school holidays will help to prevent disruption to your child's education and to the school. You should not expect the school to agree to your child going on holiday during term time and if you do take them out of school this too may result in a Fixed Penalty Notice.
Torfaen Council’s education service have launched a ‘Strive for 95!’ initiative to improve pupil attendance and reduce unauthorised absence in all Torfaen schools.
1% absence is roughly equivalent to 2 days, so a pupil achieving 90% attendance is still missing 20 days or 4 weeks of the school year.
From this year every pupil who achieves 95% attendance or higher during each school term will be entered into a prize draw at the end of the school year to win £50 of high street vouchers. Two winners will be randomly drawn from key stage 1, 2, 3 and 4 and presented with their vouchers at the end of the summer term.
Every pupil who achieves 100% attendance during the 6 terms of the school year will be written to and presented with an attendance certificate in school assemblies.
Since 2014 the council has had the authority to issue fixed penalty notice and fines for parents whose children have more than five days of unauthorised absence. The notice can be issued for any absences not authorised by the school, including holidays. Torfaen can issue these notices when concerns are raised by school or the police.
Torfaen’s Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr David Yeowell said: ‘Raising educational attainment is a priority for the council and we are committed to ensuring pupils have the best chance of success in schools. Time in school and the classroom is vital to achieving high grades and young people achieving their goals, poor attendance have a detrimental effect on a pupil’s achievement and life chances. There are 175 days per year when children are not in school. We know some days are unavoidable but every day missed is a lost opportunity to learn. Currently primary attendance stands at 95% and secondary attendance levels are at 93.6% so I’d really like to thank parents for their continued support in improving these figures further.’
